The Consular Service is the portal through which the Ministry of Foreign Relations provides consular assistance to the general public. Consular services to the public are provided under the terms of the Consular Functions Act No. 4 of 1981.

Entry Visa

Entry visa is issued to travellerswho wish to obtain residence visa to undertake an employment, business contract, investments, education, diplomatic assignment, religious engagement etc. which requires a long term stay as approved by the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka. The counterpart in Sri Lanka should submit the visa application for the traveller to the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka.

Required documents :
- Duly filled Visa application form "Download application form"
- Approval for Entry Visa from the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka
- Original Passport with more than 06 months validity from the intended date of arrival
- 02 Photographs (Size 3.5 cm × 4.5 cm)
- Copy of air ticket

- For employees, investors, business personnel, letter of invitation or business agreement with counterpart in Sri Lanka.( This should be issued at least within 3 months before the application including recommendation, details of the status of the applicant, nature of business, duration of stay, availability of funds, details of the party in Sri Lanka.)
- For students, letter of acceptance and letter of agreement with the Higher Education Institute in Sri Lanka.

- For Diplomats on assignments in Sri Lanka, a formal note (Note Verbale) from the respective government with the appointment letter.

- For members of the Clergy, invitation and sponsorship letter from the counterpart in Sri Lanka.( This should be issued at least within 3 months before the application including recommendation, details of the status of the applicant, nature of engagement, duration of stay, availability of funds, accommodation, details of the party in Sri Lanka.)

- For citizens other than Thai, need to submit a copy of Thai resident visa page and work permit for foreigners working in Thailand.

Residence Visa

A residence visa is a permit for a non-Sri Lankan to obtain residence facilities for special purposes. There are sub-categories which come under residence visas :

Apply for Resident Visa
In this case, the visa process should originate from Sri Lanka-end by the individual/institution who/which sponsor/facilitate the applicant. The concerned individual/institution in Sri Lanka should submit the application for residence visa on behalf of the applicant directly to the Controller General/Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka.

Once the Controller General/Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka approves the completed application form, the Sri Lanka Embassy will be authorized to issue entry visa (valid for 30 day) to the applicant. An entry visa allows one entry into the country and is valid for 30 days only. Upon arrival in Sri Lanka the applicant must visit/contact the Immigration and Emigration Department of Sri Lanka to obtain his/her residence visa.
