The Consular Service is the portal through which the Ministry of Foreign Relations provides consular assistance to the general public. Consular services to the public are provided under the terms of the Consular Functions Act No. 4 of 1981.

How to Apply

Through ETA:

Submit application online visa Electronic Travel Authorization ETA (for short visits) Please visit http://www.eta.gov.lk to submit your application.The ETA is initially limited up to 30 days from the date of arrival and it can be extended up to six months by the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka upon your request.The ETA is issued through an on-line system. No passport copies, documents or photographs are required.

There is no requirement to endorse the ETA on the passport. You are advised to apply for visa at least 10 days prior to your scheduled travel date andprocessing of the visa may take up to 03 working days. To check your ETA application status you may log onto the ETA website and click the “check status” button.

Please note that the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka maintains a non-refundable policy. So please ensure that the application form is filled correctly. Once the application is submitted it can neither be cancelled nor a refund obtained.

It is advisable to keep a copy of the ETA approval with you to be produced at the port of entry in Sri Lanka. All ETA holders should fulfill the following requirements at the port of entry.

- A passport valid for not less than 6 months from the date of arrival.
- A confirmed return ticket.
- Proof for sufficient funds to meet the expenses during the stay.

In the event of ETA being rejected, the system will send a referral notification to the applicant and he/she may contact the respective Embassy for assistance in order to obtain necessary instructions from the Department of Immigration & Emigration . The status of the visa cannot be changed after arrival in Sri Lanka (i.e Tourist visa will not be converted to Residence / Working visa).

Note:
On line ETA facility is not available for visits for the following purposes;

- To participate in Media/Journalist related conferences, workshops or seminars etc.
- To engage in Meetings, Seminars, Conferences etc. with Political parties and/or groups
- To engage in activities carried out by NGOs or INGOs

Approval from the appropriate Sri Lanka Government authorities should be obtained if purpose of travel is any of the above mentioned.

Potential applicants may obtain the relevant visa by submitting proof of evidence [Ex. invitation issued by respective authority, agreements signed between parties etc.] from the closest Sri Lanka Overseas Mission or from the Visa Section of the Department of Immigration & Emigration, Colombo through counterpart in Colombo for the above purposes. Thai nationals holding Diplomatic / Official passport are exempted from the ETA processing fee and the ETA procedures for their official and private visits to Sri Lanka. A visit visa for not exceeding 90 days will be issued to them on arrival to Sri Lanka.

Through Sri Lanka Embassy
For short term visits limited up to 30 days travellers can apply online by themselves through ETA system or by physically submitting an application to the Sri Lanka Mission in the respective country.

For the purposes other than the short-termvisits travellers should submit visa applications to the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Thailand, Ocean Tower II, 13th floor, No. 75/6-7, Sukumvit Soi 19, Bangkok 10110.

Necessary arrangement should be made by the applicant himself to collect the Passport after endorsement of Visa.

Important:
The Embassy reserves the right to refuse visa without assigning reasons. Before submitting Visa Application Form, please ensure all the fields of Visa Application Form are completely filled with correct information without typographical errors.

Granting or termination of visas is at the sole discretion of the Controller General, Department of Immigration and Emigration as per Section 14 of the Department of Immigration and Emigration Act No. 20 of 1948 and Department of Immigration and Emigration Regulations.
